Will the reign of terror ever end at Sully Buttes

Well, another state volleyball tournament and another appearance from Sully Buttes. The girls take on Parker in the 3rd and 4th place match today.

Well, another state volleyball tournament is just about in the books and right there in the thick of things, like always, are the Sully Buttes Chargers. Tough loss last night as the No. 2 seeded Sully Buttes girls lost to Chester, 25-17, 22-25, 25-23, 25-21.

Sully Buttes takes on Parker this evening in the 3rd and 4th place match.

After a quick trip home this evening, it will be onto the basketball court where there might be no safer bet that just going ahead and penciling the girls into the state tournament, DEEP, into the state tournament.

I think that's, Racquel Wientjes and Chloe Lamb.

Seriously, how disheartening would it be to grow up in one of the neighboring town in District 3 and District 4, be a good athlete and want to do well, only to run into the brick wall that is Sully Buttes.

District 3: Edmunds Central, Eureka/Bowdle, Faulkton Area, Herreid/Selby Area, Ipswich, Potter County

District 4 - Highmore-Harrold, Hitchcock-Tulare, Lower Brule, Sully Buttes, Sunshine Bible Academy

Guessing there is a little healthy, love, like, hate relationship whenever the Sully Buttes bus pulls up. Love the tradition, like playing them to see where we're at and hate seeing the purple hoist the big trophies, year after yer...Healthy respect for sure!

Don't have the exact specifics in front of me but have been following South Dakota sports decently close since 2005 and it seems like every year in both volleyball and basketball, Sully Buttes is having banner season after banner season.

Can you imagine the trophy case who every year gets added to with District, Region and state awards every year from multiple sports....Hmmm, might have to put that on the Panic Button bucket list for this year...Must attend a game in Sully Buttes.

So, what is it about the Sully Buttes girls?

Do they just have a series of genetically gifted athletes? Familiar with names like Lamb and Yackley and Foth....Do they have superior coaches up there? Is there just some kind of athletic under-current that runs through the town where I'm guessing tuff, farm kids permeate those rosters?

Probably a little combination of everything, but it's pretty hard to ignore them because they are always there on the biggest of stages.

Good luck Sully Buttes girls, be seeing ya soon.
