You're in good hands Winner...
By Rich Winter
It's been interesting being a more-than-casual observer of the Winner football machine this year. I've learned a lot about the tradition over in Winner, heard some wonderful stories about former Winner players and been honored to have a look inside the pulse that drives this dynasty.
I thought Brian Naasz said it best in that interview piece about Winner football and how the tradition never goes away. He said something about how when Winner travels to the Hills (St. Thomas More) how people from Winner that now live in the Black Hills come out for a chance to get a glimpse of something they've been proud of since they were in school.
Thought it interesting that I had a couple of brief conversations with Winner junior, Ty Bolton during several of the games. Little, quick conversations...I always feel a little funny about talking to someone too much during the game as I'd like them to have full attention on the game and I don't want to draw the ire of anyone on the Winner coach staff. That said, I really enjoyed watching Ty Bolton play football this season. An extremely good defender, great hands, solid..fundamentally sound tackler and he brings a certain toughness to that defense. So many good running backs in front of him, but equally as good when afforded the opportunity.
As this Winner football team put a stamp on the back-to-back titles and the rarefied air of 24-consecutive wins I gotta tell ya, I'm anxious to see what Winner does next season when guys like Bolton and Riley Calhoun step forward.
I've never seen Brandon Vollmer throw a pass and already I'm looking forward to what he'll look like next year.
Been interesting standing on the Winner sideline this season. The senior football players are huge....I see guys like Wyatt Ewing coming off the field and I'm just blown away...but then, I stroll down the sideline and I see the guys waiting in the wings and I can't help but think...
Dang, Winner, what are you feeding those kids over there...LOL!

Didn't watch the end of the game, out on assignment, but was listening on the radio and, late in that game the Winner reserves were in, and they were moving the ball.
Guessing a lot of people will be looking to get a crack at a Winner team minus a boat-load of players going to the next level...Be careful what you wish for.
