Is Rasmus To Rays A Good Deal?

The Tampa Bay Rays have agreed to a deal with 30 year old Colby Rasmus. In 2016 Rasmus hit .206/.286/.355 with 15 home runs and 54 RBI in 107 games with the Houston Astros. The Rays were looking to add power hitters this off-season and this deal does that. Rasmus has over 150 career homers in eight Major League seasons.

The downside of this deal is that basically the only ability Rasmus brings to the table is his power. Rasmus does not walk much and has big strikeout totals. Not much of a threat to steal bases and is average in the outfield. Although Rasmus does have the ability to play all three outfield spots which is good for the Rays.

The details of this deal are yet to be confirmed. Rasmus did hit a career high 25 homers in 2015, but dropped off in 2016. Do not expect Rasmus to be the savior for the Rays in 2017. If the Rays can get 20 homers out of Rasmus and at least 100 plus games it's a solid deal. Could be a guy the Rays try to flip at the trade deadline if the seasons goes south pending on the details of the deal.
