Indiana Upsets #17 Michigan St. In Overtime

The Indiana Hoosiers put forth a second half rally to nip the Michigan State Spartans 24-21. When kicker Griffin Oakes made a field goal. Oakes had just missed a field of 33-yards, but a leaping penalty gave the Hoosiers new life. The Spartans got a hand on the final field goal, but the ball had more than enough on it to clear the bar.

Indiana's offense sputtered most of the night missing on two scoring opportunities, and Oakes had missed two prior field goals in the game. A trick play by the Hoosiers in the red zone, when quarterback Richard Lagow handed off to receiver Mitchell Paige, Paige then threw ball back to Lagow for the score giving the Hoosiers momentum. The touchdown cut the lead to 14-7. The Hoosiers would add two more scores to take a 21-14 with 4:45 left in the game, but Michigan State crammed the ball down the throat of the Indiana defense to tie the game, and send it to overtime.

In the Kevin Wilson era losing close games has been the norm, but the Hoosiers used suffocating defense in overtime, where Michigan State missed a 49-yard field goal in their possession. The win breaks a seven game losing streak to the Spartans, and for the first time since 2006, Indiana possess the Old Brass Spittoon trophy.  Michigan State is 0-2 in conference play, and the Hoosiers are 3-1 on the season, and 1-0 in Big Ten play.
