Apple Cup Preview.

#13 Washington State (6-2)(9-2) @ Washington (6-2)(9-2)
Saturday; 8:00 / FOX
Washington -10
This game was once headed for game of the year status earlier in the year. Both teams were steaming ahead winning their first six games. But the Apple Cup isn't so juicy than what it could have been. Both have suffered two conference losses since mid-October that knocked both teams out of playoff consideration. The Cougars still have plenty to play for because a PAC 12 North title hangs in the balance Saturday. That should add more motivation for Washington. What better way to end a regular season, spoiling their rivals chance at a conference title? The Huskies will put up a second consecutive ten win season with a win; the first time they achieved that since 1991.

The Washington offense had heaps of hype thrown at them back in the summer. Quarterback; Jake Browning, was a Heisman canidate and had weapons Myles Gaskins and Dante Pettis returning. Both players still put up fine seasons. Gaskins put up a third straight thousand yard rushing season and Pettis hauled in 60 balls. The loss of other talent to the NFL has reduced the Huskies capability for big plays. A lack of punch from the offensive line also hampered the Huskies fortunes this year.

The Mike Leach air raid offense has taken hold in Pullman. Like Browning, quarterback Luke Falk was also a preseason Heisman hopeful. A couple of frustrating games for Falk that led to Leach pulling him out took Falk's name out of the running. The Cougars still are a dangerous, high scoring offense. Eight players have at least 26 receptions.
One thing to watch for is how each team can turn the other over. Washington has 17 takeaways and has a knack for turning Washington State over in the past. The Cougars have 27 takeaways.
Washington needs to control the ball and create turnovers. Washington State has to pressure Browning and limit Gaskins from ripping big first down gains. I think the dogs may be in the cats heads due to their recent control of the series.
Washington 41-37
