NBA: 5 players who can win rookie of the year this season

With the NBA season upon us, I thought it would be nice to take a look at five players who have a chance at being crowned the 2016-2017 season rookie of the year. With the Ben Simmons out with an injury, it opens up many opportunity's for other players to have a shot at the award. Here are five rookies to watch this upcoming season.

1. Kris Dunn PG/Minnesota Timerwolves

With Ben Simmons set to miss 4 months due to a broken right foot, Kris Dunn is the front runner to win the rookie of the year honors. The fifth selection in the 2016 NBA draft, Dunn is an all around talent who has the skills to do a little bit of everything, from scoring, to getting assists, and rebounds. Still behind Ricky Rubio, Dunn is still set to see a lot of playing time this season.

2. Buddy Hield SG/ New Orleans Pelicans

Being one of the top shooters in college, this got Buddy Hield to be selected with the with the 6th overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft. Another likely favorite for rookie of the year, Buddy Hield is a sharpshooter with the capability to be a three point threat. One of the top scorers in college, Buddy Hield has the chance to be a superstar in the NBA, and is a high favorite to win rookie of the year.

3. Joel Embiid C/Philadelphia 76ers

A first round pick in 2014, Embiid suffered a broken navicular bone in his right foot putting him out of the 2014-2015 season. Due to a setback during recovery, he was forced to miss the 2015-2016 season. Now healthy Embiid will finally make his debut in the NBA. If he stays healthy he has a chance at rookie of the year because of his rebound ability and good defensive skills.

4. Brandon Ingram SF/ Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers needed a player to begin there rebuilding process around. They felt that Brandon Ingram was there guy so they selected him with the second overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft. He is an all around talent, and he is a 3 pt. threat. Ingram has drawn many comparisons to Kevin Durant, if he can become that, then the Lakers have drafted a potential all star, and franchise player.

   5. Denzel Valentine SG/ Chicago Bulls

Mike DiNovo-USA TODAY Sports
An all around talent, Valentine showed some of his skills during the NBA summer league, hitting a game winning three to win the championship of the Las Vegas Summer League. A first round draft pick in 2016 out of Michigan state, Valentine has the chance to be an impact player for the Chicago Bulls due to the lose of Derrick Rose, and Joakim Noah. A good shooter, and overall good talent, don't be surprised to see Denzel Valentine be a key player for the Bulls this year.
