Going into 2015-16 NBA season the Los Angeles Lakers should consider bring D’angelo Russell off the bench during his rookie year for the sake of his development and opening the door for future free agents to take a serious look at LA down the road. If the Lakers decide to put D’angelo Russell in the starting lineup he will become mostly a shooter since the Lakers half court under Byron Scott last season was mostly comprised of Kobe Bryant isolations, pick and roll between Kobe and big man. While Kobe was running the offense the other wing players were just standing in place waiting for Kobe to pass them the ball.

Even though shooting is one of D’angelo Russell’s strongest assets coming into the NBA as he shot 41.1 percent from the three point line during his only year at Ohio State. Being mostly a shooter may curtail the development and/or improvement of the other areas in his game. For example D’angelo has had very good court vision up to this point in his basketball career. One of the ways D’angelo likes to display his court vision is by using the bounce pass where he would palm the ball with his left hand and a big man would set a screen at this point the teammate who was next to him would go over the top of the screen and the defender would normally follow him once his teammate made the turn towards the basket D’angelo would pass the ball.

In order to be able to use this asset at the NBA level the Lakers have to let him run the offense just so he can start picking up tendencies about NBA players he’s going against. For example if he tries to throw a bounce pass whether the defender will follow his teammate over the top of the screen or go under the screen and stop his cut to the basket. If the Lakers decide to put D’angelo Russell in the starting lineup future free agents wont take a serious look at LA after Kobe retires at least for the first few years because they haven’t seen D’angelo Russell’s potential.
