Minnesota Vikings May Be A Wild Card For The NFC In 2015:A Balanced Offense May Led The Vikings Towards A Successful 2015

Since the start of this century, the Minnesota Vikings have only been able to reach the playoffs 4 times with their last appearance coming in 2012 where they lost to the Green Bay Packers in the NFC wild card round. But going into this season, the Vikings have the roster in place to start changing this trend as I expect the Vikings to be in contention and/ or win one of the NFC wild card spots.

To obtain one of the NFC wild card spots, the Vikings should aim towards having a balanced offense where they run the ball early in games with Adrian Peterson and Jerick McKinnon. I expect Adrian Peterson to be used in short yardage situations as well normal situations because Peterson has a bigger and stronger upper body as well as a bigger lower half than McKinnon which will enable him to keep his moving forward while a defensive lineman or linebacker is trying to tackle him on the other hand Jerick McKinnon will be used in normal to long distance situations because McKinnon is faster than Peterson and can accelerate thru a hole quicker than Peterson can. Jerick McKinnon may be used when the Vikings run the ball towards the outside / sideline to avoid the pounding of running the ball between the tackle. ‘ Once the Vikings make the opposing defense honor the running game by stacking the box this will allow them to showcase the best asset of their wide receiver group, which is speed by incorporating the short and vertical passing game. I expect the Vikings to call quick pass plays like screens, slants, and curls as well as deep pass routes like a streak to try to use the speed of the Vikings wide receivers as much as possible.

Whether it be running or throwing the ball the Vikings have to make sure that they maintain or improve the time of possession from last year which was 28:45 minutes because their defense is going to give up a lot of points due to the fact that the Vikings first priority on defense is to press coverage against wide receivers which means trying to break up underneath pass plays and jumping routes. The downside to this priority is the Vikings will leave the middle of the field open and give the opposing offense a chance to make a big play downfield.
