Revisiting the Goff and Wentz Trades a Year Later

Each year in the NFL Draft teams will trade up, sacrificing future draft picks to find their franchise player. Although this has happened with many different positions it most commonly happens with teams trying to find their quarterback for the next decade. Sometimes these moves work out like Michael Vick in 2001 and Eli Manning in 2004. However, for every success story like the Giants trading numerous picks for Manning, there are several cases where a team trades up and drafts a bust. Most notably in 2012 when the Redskins trading 2 1st round picks and 2 2nd round picks for Robert Griffin III who is now a free agent after being cut by the Redskins in the Browns.

Rams move up to select Jared Goff:

Rams traded the following selections: 15(2016), 43(2016), 45(2016), 76(2016), 5(2017), 100(2017)

Titans traded the following selections: 1(2016), 113(2016), 177(2016)

Jared Goff ended up getting struggling in the preseason and was a backup quarterback behind Case Keenum up until Week 10. For the remainder of the season, Goff started in the remaining 7 games posting a 0-7 record while throwing 5 touchdowns to his 7 interceptions. Despite Goff's rough first year hope remains with a new Head Coach in Sean McVay, former Washington Redskins offensive coordinator. If Goff turns into a franchise quarterback the trade will be considered a smart trade, but if he continues down the path of a bust it will go down as one of the worst draft day trades in NFL history.

Eagles trade up to select Carson Wentz

Eagles traded the following selections: 8(2016), 77(2016), 100(2016), 12(2017), 2nd rounder (2018)

Browns traded: 2(2016), 139(2017)

Carson Wentz played in one preseason game in which he suffered a hairline fracture, sidelining him for the remaining of the preseason. With the Sam Bradford trade less than a week before the NFL season, Wentz officially became the Eagle's starting quarterback. Wentz had a decent year as a rookie leading the team to a 7-9 record, beating playoff teams like the Giants, Steelers, and Falcons. The Eagles didn't give up nearly as much as the Rams to select their starting quarterback but if Wentz doesn't pan out it will be considered a bad trade. Wentz looks to improve in his second year with the additions of wide receivers Alshon Jefferey and Torrey Smith in free agency.
