Mariners Daily 3/17

Well twice is nice and that's exactly what the Mariners were thinking as they won twice on Friday. First the Mariners defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-5 and then defeated the Dodgers 5-2. Both games featured some great offense, in the earlier game against the D'Backs the M's rallied to score 7 runs in the 9th and in the game against the Dodgers 3 different Mariners homered off of Clayton Kershaw who is one of the best pitchers in the MLB.

We'll start with the game against the Diamondbacks. Yovani Gallardo started the game for the Mariners, going 4.1 innings allowing just 4 hits and 2 earned runs. Gallardo would finish with 2 strikeouts on the afternoon but did walk 3 guys as well which is something to work on. After Gallardo, Evan Scribner pitched a perfect 0.2 innings of work, Andrew Moore struggled going 3.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO and Dan Altavilla pitched a perfect 9th going 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO.

Offensively the Mariners bats stayed quiet until late in the game. The M's had only scored 1 run until the 6th when they scored 1 and in the 9th they scored 7 runs to complete the comeback. Many of the players who had good days at the plates were the minor leaguers who helped push the M's in that 9th inning.

Defensively the Mariners once again committed an error. This time the error was Mike Freeman again who has now committed 6 errors this spring which is not good.

In the second game the Mariners had a great day against arguably the best pitcher in baseball, Clayton Kershaw. O'Neill, Martin and Valencia all hit homeruns off of Kershaw as the Mariners pounded out 5 runs on 11 hits to defeat the Dodgers 5-2. Ariel Miranda got the start for the Mariners and was the only Mariners pitcher to allow any runs going 3.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB and 4 SO. After Miranda Povse, Kiekhefer adn Weber combined to pitch 6 scoreless innings.

Offensively it was the long ball that was effective for the Mariners. Tyler O'Neill got things started with a run homerun that was a no-doubter to left field. Later Martin hit a solo-homer that was a no doubter to right field followed by a no-doubt solo homerun by Danny Valencia to left field, all coming off of Kershaw. Later the M's would score their 5th run off of an error.

Defensively the Mariners committed another error to extend their unfortunate streak of games with an error, this time the error was on Danny Valencia, his first of the Spring. As far as the pitching goes Max Povse had a fantastic game, going 4.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO and picked up the win. Dan Kiekhefer went 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO and got his second hold of the spring. Following him was Ryan Weber who went 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO and picked up his first save. Ariel Miranda started the game and had a decent day. Miranda allowed 2 earned runs and did walk 3 batters which isn't ideal, nut he did finish with 4 strikeouts and only allowed 3 hits through 3 innings.
