Handicapping the Heisman

Kyler Murray should win the 2018 Heisman Trophy. He has been the most electrifying player in all of college football this season, while also being the most valuable.

For all intents and purposes, this is a two-man race. Tua Tagovailoa of Alabama has had a spectacular season, and in almost any other season he would be worthy of college football’s highest honor. Not this year. Tua attempted only two passes in the fourth quarter this entire season prior to the SEC Championship on Saturday, a game in which Alabama played their first contest of the season that was decided by less than three touchdowns. Tua is the better pro prospect, no doubt, but an average quarterback could’ve led this Bama squad to an undefeated season.

Kyler’s stats trump Tua’s across the board. The Oklahoma quarterback has a higher QBR, more passing and rushing touchdowns, a higher completion percentage, and is responsible for over 100 yards per game more than his Alabama adversary.

The 2018 Heisman race was close for much of this season, but on Championship Weekend Tua played his worst game of the season while Kyler shredded the Longhorns defense. Just like Baker Mayfield did a year ago, Kyler Murray will be bringing the stiff-armed trophy back to Norman.
