KOBE VS DUNCAN
Only a handful of players still remain in the league from the 90's, and those that do remain were at one point great rivals and super stars. The Tim and Kobe battle has been going on for 19 years now! This one stands out most due to the amount of success both of these players have achieved during their career in the NBA and while remaining with the same organization, but how do the stats match up?
The most recent game on December 11th was Kobe Bryants farewell to San Antonio where he added 12 points 6 rebounds and 4 assists to his total and Tim added 5 points 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Here is how they match up through out the years against each other. We all know the 5 Championships for both, 1 MVP and 2 Finals MVP's for Kobe to Duncan's 2 MVP's and 3 Finals MVP's.
HOW DO THEY STACK UP AGAINST EACHOTHER DURING REGURLAR SEASON HEAD TO HEADS?
We'll call this the 1st half of the battle when both athletes were young and headed into their prime
2nd half of the battle Kobe changed his number, played in a more dominant and focused manner, but was more injury prone and a some-what consistent Duncan.
81 points in 1 game, outscored Mavs himself with 62 points in 3 quarters, 61 in the Garden, March Madness 2007 where he scored 50+ points in 5 consecutive games. 5 more missed games for Kobe overall and he still remained very dominant and consistent through out the years.
HOW ABOUT IN THE PLAYOFFS?
With Kobe out of the 2012 - 13 playoffs, that gave Duncan an additional 124 minutes to tack on 70 extra points in the 4 games Kobe was absent.
THE OVERALL PICTURE
No longer can one Super Star dominate and take charge!
As of more recent years the success and position has SHIFTED to Tim Duncan. Time and injuries finally caught up to Kobe and he can no longer carry the load of an entire team and take them to the Championship. The league is far from those days, now it is a 2 or 3 Super Star per team to win league. Ex: Durant/Westbrook, Lebron/Kyrie/Love, Curry/Thompson/Iguodala, CP3/Blake/Jordan and Duncan has the benefit of having Aldridge, Leonard, Green, the "old" big 3 (Manu and Tony with Duncan) being led by a great coach the Advantage goes to the Spurs and Duncan as a team. Even with the stability of the Spurs team and managerial staff throughout the years, Kobe still managed to find success and beat Duncan in more ways than 1 with the players and staff given to him. Take Kobe out of Lakers organization, no 2008, 2009 or 2010 Finals maybe less championships with Shaq. A great example, the last 2 seasons without Kobe due to his injuries and the Lakers have the worst record in franchise history. Take Duncan out of the equation, they still have a great coach and a great roster to contend and win championships.
