Mets comeback falls short, settle for 2 out of 3 in D.C.

The Mets came into the day looking to sweep the Nationals and really set the tone in the division, sending a message to both the Nats, and the Braves and Phillies. It started off with potential, as another RBI double off the bat of Pete Alonso gave New York an early 1-0 lead. Trea Turner turned on one in the bottom of the 3rd, and a 3-run HR made it 3-1 Washington. Anthony Rendon stretched that lead to 4-1 in the 5th inning. The Mets looked to threaten in the top of the 6th, with runners on the corners and no out, Amed Rosario lined one back up the middle, but the Nats turned a beautiful double play, which let the run score, but in exchange for 2 outs, killed the Mets rally, now 4-2. Keon Broxton tried to keep it going with a single, but Nido's weak at-bat ended the inning. The Nationals got that run right back in the bottom half anyway, with an RBI double by Victor Robles, who's proving to be a thorn in the Mets' side so far. The Mets got to the Nationals bullpen again in the 8th inning, mounting a comeback down 5-2. A lead off single by Cano and then a one out single by Conforto after a well worked at bat gave the Mets another chance to do some damage. This time Rosario made sure the ball got down, an RBI single cut it to 5-3. Sean Doolittle came in to face Jeff McNeil who didn't start today despite going 4 for 5 yesterday. McNeil struckout after taking a first pitch fastball right down the middle. Wilson Ramos and Juan Lagares laced back to back first pitch singles to tie the game at 5. Justin WIlson pitched a scoreless 8th inning and was brought back in for the 9th, and Trea Turner, once again, proving to be a Met killer, hit a line drive home run over the left field fence, a walk off to win it 6-5.

This one should sting for the Mets. The comeback felt very good, and to have nothing to show for it is very frustrating. However, turning to Miami, the Mets need to bounce back from this loss. They still took the series, which is a positive. Plus the resilience to battle back late is something we hope to see a lot more going forward.
