Rangers Fall to the Maple Leafs in a High-Scoring Game

Coming off a season-opening 4-2 loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday, The New York Rangers traveled to Toronto to face the Maple Leafs, who scored seven goals in their opening win over Winnipeg.

After four shots on goal, Toronto struck first at 2:30 when former Ranger Dominic Moore scored his first goal of the season off Henrik Lundqvist.

Shortly after that at 3:42, The Rangers tied it up on a goal by J.T. Miller, assisted by Chris Kreider and Kevin Hayes.

The Maple Leafs regained the lead at 5:34 when Center Zach Hyman grabbed the puck off a Rangers' turnover and scored a wrist shot off Henrik Lundqvist. The Maple Leafs then went on to score a total of five goals in the first and Hyman scored another goal.

The Rangers finally answered back with 22.8 seconds left in the 1st period when Defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk scored his first goal as a Ranger, but the Rangers trailed 5-2 at the first intermission.

The 2nd period was when the game really heated up as the Rangers scored three unanswered goals as Mika Zibanejad picked up his third goal of the season, Marc Staal with his first, and Mats Zuccarello tied the game up at five late in the 2nd period.

During this Rangers comeback, Henrik Lundqvist was on the bench after giving up five goals in the 1st as new Ranger Backup Goalie Ondrej Pavelec took over and had a perfect 2nd period.

The game remained tied until 7:17 in the 3rd when Toronto regained the lead 6-5 on a goal by Tyler Bozak.

The Maple Leafs scored two more goals to win 8-5 as the Rangers were held scoreless in the 3rd for the second straight game.

Despite two exciting opening games, the Rangers fall to 0-2 to start the season. They host the Montreal Canadiens Saturday Night at 7 p.m., looking for their first win of the 2017-2018 season.
