Mexico Tops Germany 1-0

It is July 17, 2018. Mexican fans wake up anxious and nervous as their side takes on the number one team in the world and defending world champions, Germany. After FIFA's World Cup draw back on December 1st, Mexico drew the defending champs along with Korea Republic and Sweden. Flashbacks came back for Mexican fans as they saw their team fall to the soon to Confederations Champions Germany 4-1.

It has been a long road since the semi final defeat to Germany. After finishing at the top of CONCACAF Qualifying, confidence was at a high for the country. Passing some European friendlies, and even having their own fans send them off with a boo after a 1-0 win versus Scotland. Even chants of Fuera Osorio (Osorio Out) were coming from the Mexican fans in the Estadio Azteca. Osorio and the team did not let this faze them.

It is 10 a.m. central time and kick off has commenced. Mexico are off to a blazing start winning a corner kick in the opening minutes of the game. Each team with their own few chances. A fast paced game between the defending world champions and the kings of CONCACAF. Juan Carlos Osorio's side executing a perfect game plan. Defending as a team, defending set pieces, and not allowing any space for Toni Kroos or Mesut Ozil. Germany applying pressure but could not beat shot stopper Guillermo Ochoa.

Counter after counter, Mexico found a break through.

Héctor Herrera with a pass to Javier Hernandez. Hernandez with space in front of him sees Hirving Lozano with space on the left sides and lays a beautiful pass to Lozano. Lozano cuts inside and makes no mistake beating Manuel Neuer.

Mexico 1 Germany 0 Lozano with a 35 minute goal to send the underdogs on top of the defending champs.

A few minutes later Germany find themselves with a free kick, not to far outside the 18 yard box. In perfect position to test Ochoa.

Toni Kroos steps up. Takes the shot. FINGERTIP SAVE FROM GUILLERMO OCHOA AND OFF THE CROSSBAR!

Halftime comes and it is 1-0 to Mexico.

Hands shaking, heart beating, stomach upset. I was nervous.

2nd half

Germany seem to get the better of us a lot by holding possession and pressing giving Mexico little time on the ball. Mexico gave the ball up with silly passes and some big mistakes. Germany moving fast trying to take advantage Mexico's mistakes but Mexico's defense had been solid all game.

Soon we see the quick and attack minded team slow down and legs are getting tired. JCO first brings on Edson Alvarez, a 19 defender from Mexico's Club America. Edson quickly cements himself into the defense and making an impact.

Mexico still soaking in pressure but would get on the counter eventually. Chance after chance for each team but neither one finding the back of the net.

Shortly later we see Raul Jimenez coming onto the match. Playing on the wing we didn't see much from the Mexican striker who played for about 25 minutes.

Mexico holding down the fort in the back getting on the occasionally counter.

Then comes the 74th minute. History is made as Rafa Marquez is subbed in for Andres Guardado taking the captain's armband. Marquez becomes the third player to play in their 5th World Cup.

Sure, Marquez is a couple steps slower than the rest, but his leadership and skills are still sharp. Leading Mexico to defend, defend, defend. The 90th minute comes.

3 more added minutes.

My thoughts in head, just. Hang. On.

What started out as a backline of 4 turned into a backline of 9.

Germany with a cross, Germany with a shot, Germany with a corner. Germany still searching for the equalizer.

THE FINAL WHISTLE.

Mexico stunned the defending champions!!

A historic and glorious win for the men in green. An eye watering moment for all fans supporting the Green White & Red! Juan Carlos Osorio successfully out coached Joachim Low. Osorio and the team successfully executed their game plan and brought it to Germany in a convincing game. At times, it might not have been the prettiest game for Mexico, but the team started the tournament in fashion.
