What a Night at Allen Fieldhouse

As the title states, it was quite the night for the Jayhawks. They broke the Guinness World Record for the loudest indoor arena. That seemed like it would be the highlight for the Hawks as they hosted the defensive West Virginia Mountaineers. Down by as many as 11 in the first half, KU made a game out of it but was still down by 7 at halftime. Fans were hoping for that usual run that the Jayhawks always seem to go on, but as the game went on and on KU just could not make a dent in the score. With just a few minutes to go and it not looking good for the home team, we got a rare sight at Allen Fieldhouse, people leaving early. As a Jayhawk fan myself, my first piece of advice is to never give up on your team, last night was a good example why.

Answer me this, if your team is down by 14 with just under 3 minutes left, do you change the channel? Well if you did last night you missed one heck of a comeback. What sounds almost impossible, happened to the Hawks. With an unheard of 21-7 run in just over 2 minutes, the Jayhawks tied the game. After forcing overtime, you could just tell that all momentum was with the Jayhawks. Oh, by the way, (not that it is a shocker) but Mason led this comeback. The Jayhawks would control overtime and end up winning in OT 84-80, in what I personally am calling the best game I've seen at Allen Fieldhouse besides the 3OT win against Oklahoma last season.

Coach Self, who hasn't lost back-to-back home games since the 88-89 season felt pretty good about this win.  “It was a toughness win. I still don’t know how we did it." Self told the press before he would go on to make a joke to the fans that left. "Our fans deserve a ton of credit, those that stayed. We had a few trickle out. They missed a hell of a finish." Self has had many great games in his career, including a comeback OT win that won him and his team the 2008 National Championship. While he's had many great games, Self had this to say about last nights game: “Somehow the guys just hung in there. I think it’s the most remarkable win I’ve ever been a part of, and we’ve had some great ones here, but we’ve never come from 14 down with 2 1/2 left against the ninth-ranked team in the country."

While this was a huge win for KU, they got some good news from the conference as Texas Tech stunned Baylor, who is currently in 2nd place in conference play and trying to knock KU off of its historic run. However, Baylor will look to bounce back as the Jayhawks travel to Waco, TX to play Baylor this weekend.
