Substantial bets have been placed for the national semi-finals games between Washington and Alabama, Ohio State and Clemson. The Crimson Tide are -14 over the Huskies with a total of 54, though 53.5 can also be had. The game debuted at Alabama -14.5 and 58. Initial money on the Tide had them go as high as 16.5-point favorites before Washington money leveled off the steam action. Thus far, 63 percent of wagers offshore and in Las Vegas are on the two-TD favorites, with a small majority of 56 percent of bets on the over.

Ohio State is either -3 juiced to the favorite or -3.5 juiced to the underdog over Clemson, with a total of 59 or 59.5. The line premiered at Ohio State -3.5 and 61.5. In a mild surprise, 59 percent of wagers are on Clemson and 71 percent on the over. “Mild surprise” because as Bob Warner of Lines-Maker.com explains, as much as the public prefers betting on favorites, “the exception is the playoffs in all sports, especially the deeper into the postseason we are.” Hence, the public betting on high-quality underdogs is not a major anomaly.
