JSU squanders series vs Alabama State

Jackson State closed out their three game home series with Alabama State University as a 7-6 loser on Sunday afternoon. The loss is JSU’s second straight and cemented their defeat in the SWAC series matchup 2-1 versus the Hornets.

The game got off to a strong start for the Tigers as they raced out to a 5-2 lead behind the batting of Junior Jaylyn Williams and a pitching error from Alabama State. Williams put the Tigers ahead early in the first off of a two- run RBI Single then followed that with a two -run RBI Double in the fifth after Junior Outfielder Cameron Dillard scored off of a pitching error from Alabama State.

The Hornets remedied their deficit by going on a scoring spree in the 6th and 7th innings. Sophomore Catcher Santiago Garcia drove in a run cutting the deficit to 5-3 in the sixth before Senior Outfielder Noel Cheneau ripped a three run homer in the 7th to give Alabama State a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

JSU did have players get multiple hits on base with Williams gaining three during his four at-bats and Designated Hitter Chris Prentiss going three of 4 and scoring three runs by himself. Junior Outfielder Equon Smith also did damage going 2 for 4 at the played driving in a run and scoring two of his own. However, the rest of the lineup left a lot to be desired for most of the game, especially during the later innings. Senior Infielders Raul Hernandez and Rahman Williams each had five plate appearances but left empty handed in the hit column while striking out once.

The defeat brings Jackson State's overall record to 10-16 with a 4-5 record in SWAC Play. The series win for Alabama State moves them to 13-12 overall and 8-3 in SWAC Play. JSU continues their homestand Tuesday afternoon with a one game affair against Tougaloo College. First pitch will be thrown at 3:00 p.m.
