It was a day of nothing but basketball and good vibes at the Backyard Sports Cares fourth annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament in Westchester NY. Backyard Sports Cares is a non-profit organization that runs sports programs and leagues for children with special needs in the Westchester area. The philosophy of the organization is to foster a positive cycle of sports; enjoy the task, perseverance, improve skills, self-esteem, maximize potential. These programs give these kids a chance where they otherwise would not have. The occasion was to raise funds to support their yearly sports league for children with special needs.

Groups of all ages and backgrounds came together to show off their skills (some tapped into archived skills) in support of an amazing cause. The tournament also brought out a few sports center top play candidates; however, the real highlights came during half time show. The children from the leagues played a quick of 5-on-5 pick-up game on center court. After an intense warm up and stretch regiment, they were ready to put on a show. There were lay-ups and swift passes all in the mix; but most importantly, their enormous smiles and tangible glee demonstrated the importance and impact of an organization of this organization.

“We believe in the power of play to enrich and build the community” said Backyard Sports Cares executive director and founder Danny Bernstein. “Today we are bringing our community together to play.

Natalie Vanheusden’s son Sebastian has been a part if the program for 3 years.

“It’s been a wonderful program to help him participate in sports which he doesn’t get an opportunity to do as easily in school. It’s a wonderful way for him to socialize and for him to learn to use his body in a different way.”

Legendary college basketball player, now coach, Derek Wittenberg came all the way from North Carolina to support and was in awe of the turnout.

“This is what community is all about and Danny is obviously all about community and about people and about reaching out and I just think this is a fun event, raising money for a good cause and I’m just happy to be here!”

It wouldn’t be a tournament without trophies right? The winner of each division was recognized and thanked for their support.

The day was a total success and accomplished its mission to bring the community together. To learn more about the Backyard Sports visit:
