Arizona Fall League All Star Game Recap

The Arizona Fall League features many of the biggest prospects from all 30 MLB teams. Scouts from all 30 teams were in attendance to see the future of professional baseball take center stage.

The scoring got started in the 2nd inning for the West. Carson Kelly (Cardinals) drove in teammate Harrison Bader (Cardinals) with a single up the middle. Michael Gettys (Padres) blew the scoring open with a 3-run double scoring Ryan O’Hearn (Royals), Carson Kelly (Cardinals), and Willie Calhoun (Dodgers). Following Gettys’ double, the West took a 4-0 lead heading into the 3rd inning.

Brent Honeywell exited the game after the 2nd inning. He did not allow a hit to the East team, while picking up 5 strikeouts and not allowing a walk. Honeywell was replaced by Michael Kopech (Red Sox).

Evan Phillips (Braves) came in to pitch for the East in the 3rd inning replacing Chris Stratton (Giants). Stratton went 2 innings, allowing 4 runs on 4 hits and a walk. Stratton also picked up a strikeout on the night.

In the 3rd inning, the West pushed the lead to 5-0 on a single by Drew Ward (Nationals). Tyler O’Neill (Mariners) scored on a throwing error by SS Franklin Barreto (A’s). A sacrifice fly from Carson Kelly (Cardinals) scored Drew Ward (Nationals) and gave the West a 6-0 lead. The sac fly gave Kelly 2 RBI on the night in just the 3rd inning. Willie Calhoun (Dodgers) extended the West lead to 8-0 with a 2 RBI single to right field. An error by Brett Phillips (Brewers) aided the runner attempting to score from second base. Following Calhoun’s single, Evan Phillips (Braves) gave way to Jarlin Garcia (Marlins) on the mound for the East. Garcia came in and stopped the bleeding for the West. Going to the 4th inning, the West leads the East 8-0.

To begin the bottom of the 4th, Corey Taylor (Mets) took over on the mound for the East.

D.J. Stewart (Orioles) took over for Tyler O’Neill (Mariners). O’Neill went 1-2 with an RBI and a run scored.

Through two innings of work, Michael Kopech (Red Sox) recorded 3 strikeouts while not allowing a base runner. He is replaced by the Astros top-prospect Francis Martes. On the first pitch that Martes (Astros) threw on the night, Brian Anderson (Marlins) picked up the first hit for the East on the night. Jacob Nottingham (Brewers) got the East on the board in the 5th inning with a double off the center field wall. Anderson came around from second to score and cut the West lead to 8-1. Ryan McMahon (Rockies) followed with a monster 2-run home run over the bullpen in right field. The East continues to cut the gap and shrinks the West lead to 8-3 heading the the bottom of the 5th.

Sam Bragg (A’s) took over for Corey Taylor (Mets) on the mound in the 5th. There were also several defensive changes for the East in the 5th inning. Scott Kingery (Phillies) takes over in the leadoff spot and comes in to play 2B. Eloy Jimenez (Cubs) replaces Brett Phillips (Brewers) in RF. Gleybar Torres (Yankees) slides from 2B to SS. Dawel Lugo (Diamondbacks) replaces Brian Anderson (Marlins) at 3B. Christin Stewart (Tigers) replaces Anthony Alford (Blue Jays) in LF. Taylor Ward (Angels) takes over for Jacob Nottingham (Brewers) behind the dish. Kevin Cron (Diamondbacks) comes in for Ryan McMahon (Rockies) at 1B.

Willie Calhoun of the Dodgers continued his monster night with a 2-run home run to right-center field. The West pushes their lead to 10-3.

David Paulino (Astros) replaces Francis Martes (Astros) on the pitchers mound. Martes went 1 inning while allowing 3 runs on 3 hits and a home run to Ryan McMahon (Rockies). The West also made several defensive changes in the 6th inning. Harrison Bader (Cardinals) slides over to RF while D.J. Stewart (Orioles) takes over in LF. Jose Trevino (Rangers) took over at catcher for Carson Kelly (Cardinals). Mauricio Dubon (Red Sox) takes over for Willie Calhoun (Dodgers) at 2B.

Jared Miller (Diamondbacks) came in for Sam Bragg (A’s) on the mound. Bragg allowed 2 runs in 1 inning pitched on the home run by Willie Calhoun (Dodgers). Bragg also recorded 3 strikeouts in his 1 inning of work.

Cody Bellinger (Dodgers) took a slider from Jared Miller deep to right field for a 2-run home run over the bullpen. The West extends their commanding lead to 12-3.

Barret Astin (Reds) takes over on the mound for the East. Astin retired both hitters he faced before being replaced by Diego Castillo (Rays). Castillo allowed 2 walks and a hit, but did not surrender a run.

Paul DeJong (Cardinals) replaced Nick Gordon (Twins) as a pinch-hitter and will remain in the game at shortstop. Harrison Bader (Cardinals) slides from RF to CF. Connor Joe (Pirates) replaces Michael Gettys (Padres) in the 9 spot of the lineup while taking over in RF.

Tyler Rogers (Giants) takes over on the mound for Joel Miller (Diamondbacks). Miller allowed 2 runs in 1 inning of work. Rogers took care of both batters he faced before giving way to James Farris (Cubs).

Courtney Hawkins (White Sox) comes in as a pinch-hitter for Ryan O’Hearn (Royals) in the 7th. Rowan Wick (Cardinals) replaces Diego Castillo (Rays) on the mound after one-third of an inning. Wick was then replaced by Brian Clark (White S0x)

Adam Ravenelle (Tigers) takes over for James Farris (Cubs). Farris threw one-third of an inning and retired the only batter he faced. Ravenelle retired one batter before being replaced by Rayan Gonzalez (Rockies). Paul DeJong (Cardinals) was hit by a pitch for his second time in two plate appearances by Ravenelle. Gonzalez hit D.J. Stewart (Orioles) before recording an out and being replaced by Matt Dermody (Blue Jays). Dermody is the last pitcher on the East team roster.

Trey Ball (Red Sox) replaces Brian Clark (White Sox) on the mound. Ball recorded one out before being replaced by Ryan Brinley (Nationals). Christin Stewart (Tigers) took Ryan Brinley deep to RF for a solo shot to make it a 12-4 game. Brinley then walked Taylor Ward on four pitches before being replaced by Edgar Santana (Pirates). Santana is the last pitcher on the roster for the West team. The two teams have combined to use 22 pitchers. Santana records the final two outs of the game to seal the deal for the West team.

Final score: West 12, East 4. Willie Calhoun (Dodgers) was named AFL All-Star Game MVP. Calhoun went 3-3 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored
