Mets Lose to Astros Despite Blasts By Cabrera, Flores
The Mets lost to the Houston Astros today 5-2. The Mets actually lead this game 2-1 going into the 9th inning. However, Tom Gorzelanny blew it. Gorzelanny went the one inning and gave up 4 runs, 4 hits and 3 walks. Gorzelanny is looking to win a spot on the roster in the bullpen. However with an outing like this, Gorzelanny better pitch perfectly for the rest of spring if he wants to have a chance to make it to the majors. Jeurys Familia gave up the other run in the 3rd. Familia gets a pass though since he has the whole suspension looming, which will be discussed later. Familia went an inning and gave up one run and 3 hits.
As for the rest of the pitchers today, they were all on point. Starter P.J. Conlon went 2 innings and only allowed a hit and a walk. Josh Edgin pitched slightly better today in his inning of work allowing no runs and no hits despite giving up 2 walks. Hansel Robles pitched superbly going 2 innings and not allowing anyone to get on base. Robles struck out 2.
However, it was Rafael Montero who had the best outing of the day. Montero pitched 2 perfect innings and struck out 4 batters. Hopefully, Montero makes a big splash this year because he was another guy the Mets had penned to be a big part of their rotation, but has not yet produced in that role.
As for the offense, Asdrubal Cabrera lead-off the game with a home run. Cabrera went 1-3 today. Wilmer Flores also went 1-3 with a home run today. Yoenis Cespedes also got his first hit of spring going 1-3 today as well. However, it was David Wright's hit that was the best to see all day. With all the injuries the captain has gone through over the past two seasons. Mets fans are hoping Wright stays healthy and has a big contributing year, which he deserves to have.
As for other Mets news, Familia is facing a possible suspension due to the Joint Domestic Abuse MLB policy which is a 30-day suspension. Familia will not know his fate until the end of the World Baseball Classic. Yesterday, Jay Bruce started taking ground balls at first base since Lucas Duda's status is uncertain. Neil Walker says he's feeling good after undergoing back surgery last season. Finally, Tim Tebow crushed 9 home runs during batting practice on Monday. Tebow, who is of football fame as a quarterback, is looking to make the team one day.
Tomorrow, the Mets travel to Jupiter, Florida to take on the Miami Marlins. Seth Lugo will make his second start of the spring. Again, Lugo is fighting for a chance to make the club as the fifth starter of the rotation. Manager Terry Collins wanted to see Lugo pitch twice early before he left to pitch for Team Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic. The Mets-Marlins match-up begins at 1:05pm and can be heard on 710am WOR.
