How about those Lyman Raiders....

The Lyman Raiders advanced to the Class B state volleyball tournament with a 3-set win over Philip.

By Rich Winter

In the aftermath of a very difficult election, finally snapped to my senses this morning and realized there were some region volleyball games of interest last night. Knew that Lyman was taking on Philip so checked the score and sure enough, the Raiders advanced with a straight set win.

Lyman    25  25  25

Philip    23  21  23

Not going to sit here and pretend I know anything about Lyman but a quick perusal of the roster tells me a couple things.

* Eight seniors dot the roster for Lyman County. Guessing that as the match with last year's Region 7 champion got tight those seniors stepped it up and performed well in the clutch and under pressure. I don't know if these girls have ever been to the state tournament in their careers, BUT, nothing can be sweeter than putting in a lot of hard work, persevering through difficult times and then kicking the state tournament door down in emphatic style.

* Holy crud there is some height on that roster - Leave it to me to look down the roster, find a 6-foot-2 girl and say WOW, kinda like we all did in the early 80's when Michelle Cox came around....

- 6-foot-2 inch Shelby Schindler, 5-feet-11 Bailey DeJong, 5-feet-10 Ashton Smith.

As my mother's maiden name is Lulf, gotta give a shout out to Quinn Lulf, DS, but, congratulations to the entire group and coach Keith Herman.

Lyman earned the No. 6 seed and they will take on the Chester Flyers in the opening round of the Class B state tournament, next Thursday, in Huron.  Lyman  had a 21-8 regular season and the girls enter the state tournament with a 24-8 mark.
