Syracuse defeats Boston University, 99-77
Cedric Hankerson made 10 3-pointers for the Boston University Terriers. However, the Syracuse Orange dominated the Terriers on Saturday afternoon. Thanks to John Gillon and Taurean Thompson off the bench, the Orange earned a 99-77 win.
Gillon had 23 points, five rebounds and four assists for the Orange. Overall, Gillon connected on six 3-pointers, with his only missing coming late in the second half. Meanwhile, Thompson added 22 points and seven rebounds. He also shot 10-13 from the field during his breakout performance. In all, four Orange players scored in double figures. Andrew White scored 19 points on 5-9 shooting from long range. Tyler Lydon contributed 10 points during another rough shooting day.
As a team, the Orange shot 14-33 from 3-point range. Over half of their field goal attempts came from beyond the arc. They also shot 51 percent from the field. However, things weren't going smooth early. The Orange fell behind 20-12 seven minutes into the game. Their shots weren't falling and the defense was a step behind the Terriers in the first half.
Hankerson led the Terriers with 34 points. He scored 19 first half points. His bombardment of the Orange defense is detailed here. Hankerson attempted 20 shots in the game. They all came from beyond the 3-point line. In fact, all of Hankerson's points came off of the 3-point shot. He was fouled on a pair of first half attempts and made 4 of 6 free throws.
Unfortunately for the Terriers Eric Fanning was the only other teammate in double figures. He scored 12 points and recorded nine rebounds during the 22-point loss. Additionally, the Orange forced 18 turnovers, while blocking eight shots. Yet, the Terriers still tallied 20 assists as a team.
Once again, Frank Howard led the Orange in assists. He came into the day averaging 6.3 dimes per game. He added 11 more helpers on Saturday. Howard missed all five of his field goal attempts, but scored six points from the charity stripe.
