For the Philadelphia Eagles: repeating as the super bowl champions is not going to be easy.

Winning the super bowl is hard but repeating as the super bowl champions is very hard. The Phildelphia Eagles begin their season Thursday night as they host the Atlanta Falcons, the Eagles will open their season as the reigning defending Super Bowl Champions after defeating Tom Brady and the New England Patriots back in February. The Eagles are on a quest to win back to back Super Bowls but many teams throughout NFL history do not always repeat as the Super Bowl Champs and for the Eagles, It’s not going to be easy.

Winning back to back Super Bowls has never been done since 2004-2005, when Tom Brady and the Bew England Patriots defeated the Carolina Panthers in 04 and defeat Donovan McNabb and the Eagles the next year. The Dallas Cowboys won back to back Super Bowls in 1993-1994 over the Buffalo Bills. The Denver Broncos won back to back Super Bowls in 1998 and 1999, the 49ers did in 1988 and 1989. The Pittsburg Steelers done It twice in 1974 and 1975, 1978 and 1979. The Miami Dolphins won back to back Super Bowls in Super Bowl 7 and 8 and of course the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowls 1 and 2.

But no team since the New England Patriots have won back to back Super Bowls, Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers won two Super Bowls between 2006-2009 but did not make back to back appearances nor won back to back Super Bowls. Eli Manning and the Giants won two Super Bowl titles against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots but the Giants were eliminated by Philadelphia Eagles in the divisional round the next year and in 2012, the Giants missed the postseason after winning the Super Bowl the year before. Peyton Manning lead the Indianapolis Colts to a Super Bowl title in 2007 but we’re eliminated by the Chargers the next year. For the Phildelphia Eagles, history is not in their side.

The NFC is going to get much tougher, the Los Angeles Rams have a new energized defense that is expected to be elite. The divison rival New York Giants are a much more built team than a year ago and will give the Eagles a tough test in the NFC east. Aaron Rodgers is back in Green Bay, Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints will be in the conversation as well. The Eagles will be without Carson Wentz for the time being and will have Nick Foles as the starter but Eagle fans should not panic, the odds were stacked against them after Wentz went down and in last year’s Super Bowl. Repeating as the super Bowl champions is not going to be easy but this team is capable of defining the odds and will look to do so as we head for the 2018 NFL season.
