So Yeah NFL, Texas May Have Gotten It Right!

Ok, stick with me on this thought. It might take a while for me to make this point and I am not sure it will make a lot of sense but the other option is you stop reading and I’m not a fan of that.

First off, the start to NFL season has been like no other. More blunders than you can shake a stick at really. It reminds me of Robin Williams’s summary of the last 10 years of US politics back in 2010.

People will hear the 2014 NFL story in the future and find it hard to believe. I’ve never seen a group stumble like this bunch. Goodell has sunk his leadership and seems to be trying to drive it through the ocean floor. You cannot lead in a time of crisis with a bunch of maybes and lies and a disappearing act. From the Rice debacle to the Irsay mess to the off season issues and arrests to the poorly handled drug scandals to the surfacing of the Ray Rice video to the lies about the Ray Rice issue to Peterson’s child abuse actions and photos to the other domestic abuse scandals to the threatened sponsorship losses to the new drug policy to the new abuse policy to the CBS pulling Rihanna’s song because she was a victim to a new domestic abuse case today. That’s a lot of screwing up.

Which lead me to the death penalty in Texas as explained by Ron White

I believe this should become the new model for the NFL. No, I do not believe death is the answer. Instead, they need to reinvent the system they use to discipline the people involved with the league.

Here are my steps:

1. Due Process Lives

People in Canada and the US are innocent until proven guilty. They deserve the right to due process until their situation has been properly investigated.

2. The Texas Exception

If there is overwhelming evidence to demonstrate your guilt, you may be punished immediately. That may result in indefinite suspension to inclusion on the newly formed special exempt list. (They certainly pulled this one out of a hat.)

3. Liar Liar Punishment Higher

If you lie to NFL investigators, they may add an additional 1-4 games to your suspension. Maybe this game could demonstrate the honor to owning up to your mistakes.

4. Teams Must Pay

If a member of a team commits a suspendable act, the team should take a cap hit or lose pics or forfeit games or maybe they play in front of an empty stadium for the playoffs or following season. Character would become a bigger deal and teams would be less likely to draft players with questionable pasts. It might also be nice to see owners and coaches become accountable for their actions. All the DUI’s by management stinks a little too much.

I am not looking to hand out participation trophies or remove the brutality of the game. I just want to feel good about the product in which I’m investing my time. I don’t want to watch a guy make an amazing catch only to remember he beats his mom. I don’t want to see an owner and be reminded of his tendency to assault women. I don’t want to watch a coach outsmart another coach after he figured out how to outsmart a breathalyser. We all make bad decisions and none of us are saints, but I think it is time to remove those who are tarnishing a game built on strength and pride.

..... and fire Goodell!!!
