Top 5 Atlanta Braves prospects

While the Atlanta Braves finished with back to back disappointing seasons in 2015 and 2016, the front office has taken massive steps forward for the future of this organization to give fans something to look forward to through all of the difficulties the organization has had. Over the past 2 years they have managed to create a top 5 farm system through signing international players, making trades,  and choosing players in the draft for the building blocks of the future team. With a farm system as deep as there's it is difficult to choose their top 5 prospects, but these are my top 5 prospects to look forward to in the Braves future.

Some Prospects who just missed the cut were, Joey Wentz LHP, Kyle Muller LHP, Touki Toussiant RHP, Ian Anderson RHP, Travis Demeritte 2B.

5. Sean Newcomb LHP

Arriving from Los Angeles in 2015 Sean Newcomb has showed signs of being a potential No.3 or No 2. starter. This year he finished 8-7 in 27 games with a 3.92 era over 140 innings with the Atlanta Braves Double A affiliate. He also struck out 152 batters while walking 71. At 6'5 Newcomb is a big, physical, and athletic pitcher. He has 3 pitches, a plus fastball that sits around 94-97 mph, but can sometimes get it into the triple digits. He also has a plus curveball that will be his swing and miss pitch. He also has an average changeup in his arsenal that can offer a different look to batters. While he still needs to work on control, don't be surprised to see him make in impact in the majors in 2017.

4. Kolby Allard LHP

Coming out of high school Kolby Allard was one of the top pitching prospects in the 2015 draft class. So the Atlanta Braves selected him with the 14th overall pick. While considered to be undersized for a pitcher Allard has a plus fastball that sits at around 92-94 mph. He also has a plus curveball, and a developing changeup. While a back injury at the beginning of his 2015 season set him back, he was back for the 2016 season. He made 11 appearances for the class A Rome Braves hosting a 5-3 record, and a 3.73 era in 60.1 innings. To go with that he also struck out 62 batters. Known to have one of the deadliest fastball curveball combos, Allard is one to watch, and he will likely move up through the system quickly.

3. Kevin Maitian SS

At the beginning of the 2016 season, many ranked Kevin Maitain as the top international prospect available. So on July 2 the Atlanta Braves signed him for 4.25 million dollars. The 16 year old Venezuelan is one of the most talented players to be singed internationally. He is a switch hitting shortstop who has the potential to be a plus hitter, and have plus power from both sides of the plate. While he is a below average runner, it does not affect his defense what so ever. He is a smooth defender with a plus strong arm. While he can play shortstop, most scout project him to move to third base when he reaches the pros. While I could have ranked him higher for his upside high celling potential he has yet to play, and is only 16 years old. But Maitian has a high celling that the Braves hope he reaches. If he does reach it, he has the chance to be a yearly all star for many years.

2. Ozzie Albies 2B/SS

Signed back in 2013 at the age of 16 Albies has done nothing but impressed. Now he is 19 year old and has made his way up to Double A. He had a brief stint in Triple A during the 2016 season but was sent down to begin to start playing second base. Albies is a plus hitter, and a plus plus runner. While power is not an aspect to his game he did hit 4 home runs in Double A this season. while originally a shortstop, the addition of shortstop Dansby Swanson will move Albies over to second base. He is an above average defender, with strong arm. This season in Double A he batted 321. with 21 stolen bases over 82 games. Albies is another key player in the Atlanta Braves rebuilding process and is an exciting player in the Braves future.

1. Dansby Swanson SS

The Atlanta Braves made a great decision trading Shelby Miller for the first overall pick in the 2015 mlb draft, Dansby Swanson. Ranked as a top 5 prospect in all of baseball Dansby Swanson made a quick jump to the major leagues making his debut on Aug 18. Swanson is a plus hitter, and a plus runner. While power is not a major part of his game, he should hit a average of 15 home runs annually. Also he is a above average defender with the ability to stay at shortstop. Entering into the 2017 mlb season Swanson will still be rookie eligible. During his 38 games in the majors, Swanson batted 302., with 3 home runs, 17 RBI, and 3 stolen bases. One of the most exciting prospects in baseball, Dansby Swanson could be superstar, shortstop, who constantly makes highlight plays and the franchise player for the Atlanta Braves.
