Wake Forest did not shoot extremely well, but with strong rebounding and scoring in the paint, the Demon Deacons were able to defeat the Richmond Spiders 75-67 on the road and improve to 6-2 on the season. Forward John Collins led the way with 16 points and 13 rebounds for yet another double-double this year. Wake Forest was able to get to the foul line often by forcing 25 Richmond personal fouls. Their free throw percentage was not great, but they made 21 free throws, which was over 25% of the Deacons points.
Wake Forest was able to control the glass throughout the game. The Deacons were able to use their size advantage to get 45 rebounds compared to just 31 for the Spiders. No Richmond player was able to get in the double-digits in the rebounding category.
Wake Forest's rebounding was important as they struggled from the three point line. What has been a strength for the Demon Deacons was not able to be relied upon to earn them this victory. Keyshawn Woods, Dinos Mitoglou, Bryant Crawford and Brandon Childress all failed to make any three point baskets. Only Austin Arians made more than one shot beyond the arc. With solid rebounding and improved defense Wake Forest was able to lead for most of the game and defeat the Spiders.
Richmond didn't help themselves when they went to the free throw line as well. The Spiders were just 6 for 14 in free throws, below 50% from the charity strike. These missed opportunities hurt the Spiders in their comeback as they missed some critical shots down the stretch that could have made it a two possession game.
Wake Forest returns home for their next game against the Charlotte 49ers. Richmond's next game will be against UMBC at home.
