Crosby and Malkin Firepower Lifts Penguins over Flyers

Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

How rare is it that Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin scored not only once, but also twice? That definitely sparked the Pittsburgh Penguins over in-state rivals Philadelphia Flyers 5 to 4.

The Flyers jumped to a 2 to 0 lead in the first-period thanks to goals by Jakub Voracek and Wayne Simmonds. It seemed as if the Penguins were in for another long game on the road.

Later in the period, the Flyers took shot the puck and it went off the post. However, the Penguins went in transition, and Sidney Crosby scored his first goal of the night. 44 seconds later, he scored a power-play goal to tie the game at 2. 12 seconds later, Matt Cullen scored to give the Penguins a 3 to 2 lead. Pittsburgh evaporated the energy in the building.

Steve Mason stopped 10 shots for the Flyers, but because he gave up 3 goals in less than a minute, he was pulled in favor of Michal Neuvirth after the first period. Neuvirth stopped 12 shots in relief.

In the second period, Evgeni Malkin scored for the Penguins. Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek (penalty shot) scored goals for the Flyers in the same period.

Evgeni Malkin scored the game-winning goal with 11:27 remaining in regulation. Marc-Andre Fleury made some timely saves down the stretch and he stopped 38 shots.

These teams will face each other three more times this season.
