After watching the Celtics play against the Raptors last night, I would be very hesitant if I were the Celtics to commit long-term to Isaiah Thomas. While he has had a tremendous season thus far, at just 5'9", he struggles at times to create enough separation to get clean shots off. Typically, after the All-Star Break is when NBA teams buckle down and really play hard-nosed defense. After seeing Thomas struggle the way that he did last night in Toronto, I just cannot see a team with championship aspirations having to rely on the southpaw to get a bucket in a big game, let-alone an NBA Finals game.

With this being said, I think the Celtics already felt this sentiment deep down in their gut. It is why they did not sell the farm to land Jimmy Butler or Paul George at last week's trading deadline. Boston needs a franchise point guard first, and Isaiah Thomas just does not for that mold for the Celtics. With their pick in this coming draft, that will likely be one of the top selections due to the Nets utter incompetence, Boston will look to snag either Markelle Fultz or Lonzo Ball and place their trust in one of them as the point guard of the future.

Isaiah Thomas, who will be eligible for a mega-extension this summer, is a fine player, but at just 5'9" I am not so sure he can be relied upon by a championship-caliber team. Yes, the 76ers had a short-run of success with Allen Iverson, who was sub 6-feet, but he's the exception not the rule. Isaiah Thomas is a fine player, but he is better suited to be the third best player on a championship level team, not the go-to player in crunch-time.
