Mets open 2019 season with a win

Baseball's best Opening Day team took the field for yet another year filled with optimism. Before the Nats even came to bat, the Mets grabbed the lead on a solo home run by Robinson Cano, their big offseason acquisition. deGrom defended his Cy Young award well against Scherzer, going 6 innings, allowing 5 hits over that span but striking out 10 to bring his career K total to 1,010. The Mets added insurance in the 8th after Dominic Smith drew a pinch hit walk, Pete Alonso and Cano knocked back to back singles to score him, and the Mets 2-0 lead held the rest of the way. Their bullpen put together 3 innings of hitless work, and a total of 4 strikeouts, 3 of which from Lugo who struckout the side in the 7th. Edwin Diaz secured his first save of the season. It was a textbook Opening Day W for the Amazin's. Tomorrow they get the day off before resuming the series on Saturday, as they pit Noah Syndergaard against the Nats' Stephen Strausburg.
