Mistakes ruin Gamecocks chances at an upset over #9 Aggies

There may have been a few fans out there that were expecting nothing less than a win on Saturday. However, the likely hood of the Gamecocks getting a win were slim to none. Texas A&M came in the number nine team in the nation and had been putting up points all year on all their opponents, but the Gamecocks held them to a season-low in points at 24. The Gamecocks had their chances on Saturday but were unable to come away with a victory and lost 24-13 to the Texas A&M Aggies.

The Gamecocks got off to another electric start at home scoring on the first play of the game with a 75-yard rushing touchdown from AJ Turner. Unfortunately, that would be the only touchdown the Gamecocks scored the rest of the game. Brandon McIlwain got the start for the third straight game and just hasn't had the success that the Gamecocks need him to have to compete with the best in the SEC. McIlwain was 9/15 for 34 yards and 1 interception on Saturday through three-quarters. Perry Orth came in with about 11 minutes left in the fourth quarter. Orth provided a spark for the offense, but it just wasn't enough to mount a comeback. Orth was 11/18 for 138 yards in the fourth quarter. Texas A&M quarterback Trevor Knight had a pretty good game. He was able to make big plays in the passing game and in the run game. Knight was 23/40 for 206 yards and 1 interception and had 12 carries for 88 yards and 1 touchdown. Texas A&M defense had eight tackles for loss. 3.5 of those tackles for loss came from Daeshon Hall who had two sacks in the game. The Gamecocks defense is continuing to make strides. They made a lot of big plays against Texas A&M that put the offense in good position, but the offense just couldn't seem to punch it in and two missed field goals by Elliott Fry didn't help the cause. The Gamecocks have to regroup and get ready for a big showdown at home next Saturday versus Georgia.

Some game takeaway's

*Texas A&M and South Carolina had some key guys out for today's game. The Aggies were without All-American Defensive Myles Garrett and Wide Receivers Ricky Seals-Jones and Speedy Noil. The Gamecocks were without Wide Receivers Deebo Samuels, Bryand Edwards, and Roc Davis.

*True Freshman Rico Dowdle saw his first action this season after being sidelined with an injury through the first four games of the season. Dowdle had 9 carries for 47 yards. Dowdle looked pretty good in his first action as a collegiate player. Adds some depth to that position.

*Sophomore tight end Hayden Hurst leads the team in reception and receiving yards. Hurst has 24 receptions for 302 yards on the season. KC Crosby and Hurst have become a pretty nice duo at tight end. Crosby has 13 receptions on the season and 102 receiving yards and 1 touchdown.

*Elliot Fry was 2/4 with field goals. Fry made two field goals from 43 yards out and missed two from 43 and 44 on Saturday.

*Darius English had six sacks in his first three years as a Gamecock. Through five games this season he as five sacks. English had a lot of hype coming into the program. It is nice to finally see him playing up to his potential.
