Recruiting Profile: Billy Ross
In this edition of the Heel Tough Blog’s Recruiting Profile series we get to meet Huntington, WV’s Billy Ross. The last time the Heels dipped into West Virginia, they came out with one of the greatest players in program history (Ryan Switzer), and their hoping to strike gold once again. Ross was a big pickup on the offensive line, literally and figuratively, as Ross is 6’6” and 310 lbs. Ross played tackle in high school and will most likely have to play there at the college level as well due to his height.
The tape on Ross is rather impressive. Ross is great in the run block, as his strong up body allows him to drive defensive ends down the field with ease. This allows him to open massive holes for his running backs, something the Heels lacked last year. Ross is no slouch in pass protection either. While he is 310 pounds, Ross moves that weight around well, allowing him to anchor himself against pass rushers and keep them away from pocket. If Ross can build on these attributes at the college level he will be one of the anchors of the offensive line within the next few seasons.
Ross committed to Carolina back on July 31st, but chose not to enroll early. He will arrive in Chapel Hill for fall camp, meaning he will have little time before the season to make a push for playing time at the vacant right tackle spot.
