NFL Proposed Rule Changes for 2017

NFL: Super Bowl LI-Winning Team Press Conference

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has been reading deep into the official NFL rule book looking for ways to change up the game. Here are some of the NFL's proposed rule changes (Via NBC Sports) that each team owners will vote on next week:

1) Jumping up to block an extra point or field goal will no longer be allowed.

2) Touchback would be moved up to the 25-yard line as opposed to the 20-yard line.

3) There would be a permanent ejection rule for players who commit two unsportsmanlike conduct fouls (it was only a test last season).

4) More protection for defenseless receivers looking back at the ball (including the five-yard zone).

5) League officials get final say over all replays.

6) The sideline booth review tent will no longer be a thing. A tablet will be handed to the official on the field to make a decision.

7) Referee can talk about replays during commercial breaks.

8) There will be a 40-second clock when transitioning from kicking an extra point to kickoff if there is no commercial.

Roger Goodell is proposing the length of halftime to be 13 minutes and 30 seconds. There would be no extra time for players to make their way out of the locker room.

Let me know what you think about these changes.

I think that proposed rules 3,4,7, and 8 are good. I think those can get votes from owners next week. Last season the NFL had all kinds of issues with misconduct on and off the field and defenseless players getting hurt. Some of the cases were a disaster because they were not handled properly. Implementing a stricter ejection rule will help keep players under control.

Roger Goodell has talked briefly about wanting less commercials during games, but I doubt anything will change with that. I like the idea that officials could talk about replays and explain more about why a certain foul was called during game breaks.
