NFL Draft Flashback: 1994 NFL Draft Dan "Big Daddy" Wilkinson
"Big Daddy" Dan Wilkinson was one of the most dominating players in college football during the 1993 season while at Ohio State University. He accumulated 44 tackles, 13 tackles for loss and received all-big ten honors. Wikinson would also be selected to his second consecutive All-American team giving him reason to skip his senior season and enter the 1994 NFL draft.
23 years ago today, Wilkinson would be selected 1st overall by the Cincinnati Bengals, a team that was looking to change their fortunes after a dismal 3-13 season. "Big Daddy" Wilkinson held out 11 days before signing his 6-year $14.4 million dollar deal.
Dan would play for the Bengals for four seasons accumulating 23 sacks and 107 tackles leading the team in sacks two of his four seasons in Cincinnati. He would be traded to the Redskins after his fourth season after a dispute with ownership over his contract.
Wilkinson's career was steady as he would play 5 seasons in D.C., leading the team in sacks in 1999. He would finish his 13-year career in Detroit and Miami registering a combined 31.5 sacks. Dan is considered by many to be a bust, but he had a solid career just not that of a 1st overall pick, which carries the most pressure. Wilkinson still resides in the DMV with his wife and two children.
