Games To Watch: Week 2

For the 1st time, Alabama is offensively strong. Some of the Top 10 teams were impressive, but it was Week 1 against weak teams. Penn State and Michigan State's slip up is either just Week 1 jitters or something apparent. Miami and Florida State were disappointments over their hype and swag, but it also showed that LSU may have solved their quarterback woes and Virginia Tech's old man Bud Foster needs to get PAID!!! Coaching debuts have been a bit even and odd, especially for Texas (twice), Arizona, Florida State, and UCLA, but Herm Edwards winning debut with Arizona State is always awesome to hear. The Pac-12 is not in trouble, but the Washington loss and the next game between Stanford and USC could have some implications unless Oregon's potential run provides hope...maybe. And lastly, how about Hawai'i's Cole McDonald?

Here are my Top 5 Games that should be fun to watch and could shift the Top 25. One thing's for sure, the number one game will show who's the better coach overall.

UPSET) FOR 3 BIG TEN SCHOOLS

The three schools I think will struggle a bit are Nebraska at home, and Michigan State and Penn State on the road.

Nebraska was unable to debut Scott Frost against Akron due to a weather delay, but I'm also unsure if they're ready defensively against Colorado's offense. Quarterback Steven Montez showed up with over 300 yards passing, even though it was against Colorado's State's bad defense. We'll see what Scott Frost can come up with to keep up with or slow down their offense.

Michigan State struggled against Utah State. Utah State's offense was picking apart their defense, which doesn't have cornerback Josiah Scott due to injury. The defense gave them fits most of the game and that definitely left some weak spots that need addressing. Arizona State's defense did their job in Herm Edwards' debut and looks confident to challenge the Spartans at home. If quarterback Manny Wilkins can expose them in the passing game like Utah State's Jordan Love did, this could lead to a huge win for Herm Edwards to kick off his first year.

Last but not least, Penn State. Penn State could've easily ran away with the win last week, but they let their guard down against Appalachian State's offense that had a new quarterback and nearly lost. Quarterback Trace McSorley is their guy to take them far, but this defense can't slip up again against their rival Pittsburgh.

Probably one of these 3 Big Ten teams will struggle and it could break their season if they lose. It could also cause playoff implications if they fail to win.

4) IOWA STATE (0-0 OVERALL) at IOWA (1-0 OVERALL) - 2PM PT/5PM ET [FOX]

Last season's matchup was a doozy that ended with Iowa winning in overtime. The Hawkeyes have 3-straight wins on the Cyclones, but the Cyclones are creeping up with the roster they have returning, including quarterback Kyle Kempt. This is Iowa State's first game this season, and it'll be right in Iowa City. With Iowa's defensive lineman Cedrick Lattimore coming off suspension, Iowa State better have their offensive line ready because Iowa has one of the toughest front four in college football. Since 2005, every time the Cyclones came up short last season, they won the next season and it happened three times out of their 4 opportunities. But when you go into the most difficult place to play, it won't be easy to succeed.

3) #3 GEORGIA (1-0 OVERALL) at #24 SOUTH CAROLINA (1-0 OVERALL) - 12:30PM PT/3PM ET [CBS]

Three seasons after Steve Spurrier retired from South Carolina, Georgia owned them. They won the last 3 meetings by an average of 20 points, but the last 2 were cut down to 2 scores, so there's progression for the Gamecocks. The offense looks to score plenty of points since they have a quarterback, a running back, and do-it-all receiver Deebo Samuel returning for their third year. The hope for an upset comes from their defense, which in the last 2 seasons weren't good. How ironic for a Will Muschamp-coached team. They face the now National Championship runner-up Georgia squad that features quarterback Jake Fromm and running back D'Andre Swift. The biggest question is if their defense can succeed without most of their veterans. South Carolina couldn't reach 20 points in the last 2 seasons due to their offensive struggles. But now quarterback Jake Bentley is seasoned, the receivers look better, and the running game looks plausible. If South Carolina's defense have things figured out, this could be the their biggest win of the season.

2) #17 USC (1-0 OVERALL) at #10 Stanford (1-0 OVERALL) - 5:30PM PT/8:30PM ET [FOX]

It's early to assume that this hints another conference championship matchup, but Washington and Arizona's loss could give Stanford and USC a head start. Either team that lose won't help their playoff chances...but again, I'm assuming. Stanford won 7 of the last 11 matchups since 2009, but USC has an edge with 4 of the last 7 since 2013, including 2 straight wins. USC works with new quarterback JT Daniels, and he's promising in the future. But what's interesting is the level of talent in the run game. Stanford proved that they don't have to rely on Bryce Love. They found the passing game and quarterback KJ Costello is now their guy. After 2 seasons, they finally make use out of 6'3 222 lb receiver JJ Arcega-Whiteside and I couldn't be happier for him. They have other tall receivers and tight ends that gives them leverage in the redzone. The winner has leverage going forward. Also, if they both show that this is a must-watch game, you'll possibly see this matchup again in December.

1) #2 CLEMSON (1-0 OVERALL) at TEXAS A&M (1-0 OVERALL) - 4PM PT/7PM ET [ESPN]

Here is another matchup between Jimbo Fisher and Dabo Swinney, but in different conferences and in Week 2. Dabo and Clemson step into his new home and hope to continue their success over him. Clemson has depth across the board, especially for quarterback, running back, and the defensive line. There's not much weakness on that roster and that's what Texas A&M has to worry about as the game wears on. Coach Fisher will make this program better. They have a strong running game with Trayveon Williams already 3rd in the nation with 240 rushing yards. Quarterback Kellen Mond could be the quarterback going forward. He slowly picked things up and he focused on passing first more than running too. The only concern is ball control because they fumbled twice and lost one last week. Clemson received their 1st win in school history against the Aggies over a decade ago and hope to get a big win in College Station. This game is for sure A&M's offense versus Clemson's defense and it'll be rocking early in College Station. Can it stay that way for all 4 quarters or will Clemson run away with it?
