Sicangu Youth Council asking for Volunteerism/Donations as Veterans head to North Dakota...

With a number of local veterans heading to North Dakota this weekend, the Sicangu Youth Council is asking people to step forward with donations to aid the Veterans in this most monumental occasion.

When news first surfaced that a national movement sending Veterans to North Dakota this weekend was underway, the Sicangu Youth Council took note, dug in and tossed out ideas of how they could help. Initially the youth group that helped get the ball rolling regarding the repatriation of the buried Native Americans at Carlisle Indian School set their sites on Chris Turley, the Native American from Omaha that was scheduled to stop in Mission on his way to North Dakota.

When Turley didn't stop in Mission, and the news began to grow that a national movement would be sending Veterans from all across the country to North Dakota this weekend, and then when the news surfaced that local veterans would be heading to help protect the 'Water Protectors' the youth council decided to dig in and help the efforts locally.

The Sicangu Youth Council is asking that people consider the Veterans that are going to North Dakota this weekend by stopping by the Veterans Building in Rosebud to help with the cause.

A quick visit with Orlando Morrison, Veterans Service Director, Friday morning suggests helpful items to consider donating would be gloves, stocking caps, full-weather-gear and even basics like socks and long-johns.

During an organizational meeting Thursday, one Antelope resident, a Veteran, donated a cord of wood that was being hauled to Standing Rock on Friday morning. "Wood is like gold up there," Morrison told those in attendance at Friday's meeting.

Donations such as wood, would be greatly appreciated.

All items can be dropped off at the Veterans Building in Rosebud today or early Saturday morning as the Veterans are expected to gather in Rosebud and leave at 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning.

While some of the costs have been covered, monetary donations could always be used. Contact Dion Reynolds for further information regarding monetary donations.

Be kinda nice to see some people gather and line the highways and send these most precious protectors of the water protectors off in style.
