Huskies declaw Catamounts with 5-1 win

UConn‘s offense awoke last night at the XL Center when they piled on a 20 shot, three goal second period to beat the Vermont Catamounts on Friday night at the XL Center.

UConn has struggled terribly over the last couple of games after being embarrassed by Miami of Ohio where they were outscored on the road 10-1 in a two game set last weekend. Star goalie Adam Huska was pulled in the second game where the Huskies were beat 7-1 and 3-0 the night before.

The 5-1 win last night marked a solid win over a Hockey East opponent although the lackluster play of this game squarely lay on the shoulders of Vermont. The Catamounts only mustered 21 shots on the Huskies Sophomore net minder, including only 11 shots through the first 40 minutes.

UConn Senior Spencer Nass was the games first star. He had five shots on the night and scored a pair of goals. Max Letunov and Joseph Masonius helped the Huskies cause, each with two assists.

Now the question turns to whether the Huskies can capitalize on this momentum and sweep the weekend series with Vermont. They play again today at the XL Center at 3:30pm.

Breakaways:

UConn will be hosting a Hartford Whalers Night next Saturday at the XL Center as UConn will face off against the Ohio State Buckeyes at 7pm

This was the third time the Huskies scored at least five goals in a game. One against AIC(6) and the other Maine(5).

The State Budget that was just passed with 40 million going towards improvements and repairs for the 44 year old building. This is ten million less than what Governor Malloy had originally proposed for the building this year. Do not let anyone say the XL is doomed, at lead time not yet.

Also within the budget is a deadline to sell the XL Center to a private investor. It’s a bit like a used car salesman telling you that a rusty hulk has “plenty of miles left”. Although those miles are much more expensive when the infrastructure is running on parts from the 70’s and 80’s but more importantly the lack of commitment on the XL Center puts UConn’s future as a Hockey East competitor at risk with no future place to play looming over the states flag ship university.
