Detroit Red Wings Playoff Streak is Over

NHL: Detroit Red Wings at Carolina Hurricanes

All good things come to an end eventually for everybody. With the Detroit Red Wings losing yesterday to the Carolina Hurricanes, they have officially been eliminated from playoff contention. The 25 straight playoff appearances for them is finished.

It was tied third longest in NHL history. The Pittsburgh Penguins now own the current streak of years making the postseason in a row is at 11.

The Red Wings won four Stanley Cups in that span (1997, 1998, 2002, and 2008). They lost in the finals twice (1995, 2009).

Isn't it kind of ironic that Detroit's last season at the Joe is a one of missing the postseason?

They have some key pieces for the future, but the biggest question for them is their goaltending situation. Jimmy Howard, Petr Mrazek, and Jared Coreau doesn't seem to be a true answer to the Red Wings.

The absence of high quality draft picks, Mike Babcock, and Pavel Datsyuk have really hurt this team.

I am not saying that Jeff Blashill can't coach, he isn't the same alpha male in the room like Babock is.

Don't worry Red Wings fans, this team will be back to glory sooner rather than later.
