For a lot of people expecting a 38-35 shootout between the Los Angeles Chargers and the New England Patriots, they didn't get it. New England won the game 21-13. It was supposed to be a heavy rain afternoon but it stayed cloudy for most of the game.

Melvin Gordon scored on a 87-yard touchdown run for the Chargers in the first quarter. He finished with 132 rushing yards on 14 carries and a score. This was the longest touchdown run in Chargers history. The previous record was LaDainian Tomlinson's 85-yard touchdown run in 2006 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

In the second quarter, Rob Gronkowski caught a 2-yard touchdown pass from Tom Brady. Brady completed 32-of-47 passes for 333 yards and a touchdown. Gronkowski finished with 5 receptions for 57 yards and a touchdown. Later in the second, Travis Benjamin caught a punt for the Chargers and then he decided to run backwards and was tackled in the end zone for a safety.

Stephen Gostkowski made four field goals for the Patriots (25, 36, 43, and 26 yards). He also missed two field goals on the day as well. In the fourth quarter, Phillip Rivers threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Travis Benjamin. Rivers completed 17-of-30 passes for 212 yards one touchdown and one interception. Benjamin finished with 5 receptions for 64 yards receiving and a touchdown.

The Chargers had one final chance in the fourth quarter, but Phillip Rivers was picked off as time expired by Jonathan Jones. The Chargers and Patriots will go on a bye week next week.
