Fifth Down: Eagles Lose Their First Game of the Season!

Welcome to the first installment of "Fifth Down" a new weekly Eagles column, every week after the Eagles game I will give my five thoughts/takeaways of each game. This will be my thoughts on the game win or lose.

The Philadelphia Eagles loss their first game of the season Sunday afternoon to the Detroit Lions 24-23. It was a heartbreaking loss as the Eagles had a chance to win the game. However, rookie, Quarterback Carson Wentz on the first play after the Lions retook the lead on a field goal, throws a long pass attended for Nelson Agholor that was intercepted by the Lions' cornerback, Darius Slay to seal the victory. It was Wentz's first interception of his career.

Game Highlights

My Five Thoughts on the Game:

1. The Eagles were unprepared on both sides of the ball, the defense especially. The offense got it together however it wasn't as shape as it was in the first three games. There was some questionable play calling especially the long throw at the end of the game that Carson Wentz threw that was intercepted to seal the win for the Lions.

2. Defense had a lack of discipline from stupid penalties to miss tackles , it wasn't the same defense from what we saw in the first three games. Jim Schwartz and his coaching stuff on the defense is to blame for that.

3. Carson Wentz played a great game up until that INT at the end. It was a rookie mistake by both Carson and Doug (called the play), it shouldn't never been called. You throw short passes and get in position for Caleb Sturgis to kick the game winning field goal. Wentz kept the Eagles in the game and he them back from 14 points down but the just couldn't finish it.

4. The Ryan Matthews fumble with 2:41 left cost us the game, it gave the Lions great field position to kick the go-ahead field goal.

5. It seemed like the Eagles were looking past the Lions for what reason who knows. It's very possible that they were buying into the hype and got little cocky for their own good.

Final Thoughts:

It was a very disappointing loss yes but it was just one game not the end of the world. In noway they should of loss this game to the Lions who just loss to the Chicago Bears the week prior. Yes the same Bears team that the Eagles dominated in week two. Doug Pederson and the coaching stuff should of had this team better prepared, there's no excuses for not being prepared when you had two weeks (Bye week) to get ready for this game. When the Lions took a 14-0 lead I knew it wasn't gonna be an easy game to win but I had confidence in the them to come back. The rest of October isn't gonna be easy a trip to the Nations Capital to play the Redskins this Sunday, that's followed by the return of Sam Bradford to Philadelphia (vs. the Minnesota Vikings), then the month ends with a Sunday night game in Big D to face the hated Dallas Cowboys in Prime Time. I'm taken it game by game, I'm not worried about this loss like some fans are, I believe this team can bounce back.
