"The Stack" 7-25-17

The Stack is back on this Tuesday with a very short posting today. I mean really short. We may have a blog tomorrow, but otherwise this may be it for the week as we are taking a mini vacation so let’s get right to it and see what’s in “the stack” for today, Tuesday, July 25th:

Rose signs with the Cavs

As the whole Kyrie Irving saga continues to unfold and the Cleveland Cavaliers figure out what they need to do with him, they have at least added a piece that could help them for next season provided he stay healthy. That would be Derrick Rose who signed a one-year, $2.1 million deal. That is an insane deal considering the money that has been thrown to other players who aren’t nearly as good and worth a damn like Rose is. Rose averaged 18 points a game this past season, but he wasn’t the best on the defensive side. Still, Rose is an upgrade for the Cavs and that has to make LeBron James happy. We don’t know what will happen with Irving. Adding Rose does help even if his salary is like a slap in the face.

Kershaw potentially out 4-6 weeks

We talked yesterday about Clayton Kershaw exiting Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Braves with back tightness. We now know the expected time table for him. It is believed that Kershaw will be out 4-6 weeks, but the Los Angeles Dodgers will wait on officially saying he is going to be out that long until Kershaw meets with the team’s back specialist. The Dodgers should be okay with Kershaw being out. He was out last year and they survived and made the postseason. They have the best record in baseball right now. They can go out and add another pitcher before the trade deadline be it a Sonny Gray, Yu Darvish or Justin Verlander. The Dodgers will be fine. They just want to make sure Kershaw is and will be for the October push.

In other baseball news, Giancarlo Stanton hit home runs 31 and 32 as the Miami Marlins beat the Texas Rangers 4-0. Stanton is now tied with Aaron Judge for the league lead in homeruns. And the Minnesota Twins have pulled the trigger on a trade Atlanta Braves pitcher Jaime Garcia sending a minor league pitching prospect to the Braves for Garcia and catcher Anthony Recker. The Braves will pay the rest of Garcia’s contract which is $4.6 million. That is a big win for the Twins. Adding Garcia bolsters Minnesota’s rotation and Garcia will be the number three pitcher behind Ervin Santana and Jose Berrios. Good move by the Twins who are trying to stay afloat in the AL Central race and the AL Wild Card.

NFL Training camps open up

Training camps are starting to begin in the NFL and there is already some news. Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Lucky Whitehead has been cut by the team following they found out he was charged with shoplifting and arrested though Whitehead’s agent says it is a case of mistaken identity and that Whitehead was not in the area at the time of the arrest. Interesting that this is the incident that the Cowboys draw the line at yet owner Jerry Jones will defend running back Ezekiel Elliott and basically call his accuser a liar in the domestic violence incident that is still hovering over the Cowboys running back. Elliott is really good and Whitehead was expendable. Simple as that. Doesn’t look good on Jones, Elliott or the Cowboys.

Some guys are starting training camp on the PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list as camps open. Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck is throwing, but not ready for training camp yet so he is on the PUP list. Minnesota Vikings running back Latavius Murray who had ankle surgery after signing with the team is also on the PUP list. Teammate Sharrif Floyd is on the non-football injury list, but we haven’t seen quarterback Teddy Bridgewater’s name yet. He is expected to begin on the PUP list as he continues to recover from that gruesome knee injury last year. Expect that to come in the next day or two.
