The Stack is back on this Monday and there isn’t a whole lot to talk about today other than news from the NFL. Lindsay Whalen had surgery on her wrist for the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx. If that isn’t doing it for you, we’ll see what else we can find in “the stack” for today, Monday, August 7th:
Tannehill injures knee, Cutler signs with Dolphins
It has been a pretty up-and-down roller coaster ride for Miami Dolphins fans since Thursday. It hasn’t been a fun ride and I doubt it has been fun for Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill either. While it sounds like Tannehill will miss significant time after he injured his knee on Thursday, it isn’t known for sure if he will need surgery on his ACL. The team could elect to do that after a period of time if Tannehill doesn’t improve the way they hope to. So they coaxed Jay Cutler to come out of retirement and the FOX booth and sign a one-year, $10 million deal. This means that Cutler is reunited with his former offensive coordinator Adam Gase who is the Dolphins head coach of course. Cutler had the best season of his career when Gase was his offensive coordinator a few years back in Chicago. Gase knows Cutler and knows what kind of fit he can be for the Dolphins. Sure Colin Kaepernick has better numbers and is a better athlete, but given that he wore a Fidel Castro shirt once and had some ill-advised comments on Castro, with Miami’s Cuban population, it would not make sense for the Dolphins to sign him. Cutler knows the system and he can help make sure that the Dolphins have at least a fighting chance while Tannehill gets healthy whether that be for six to eight weeks or the entire season.
NFL Hall of Fame weekend
One of the NFL’s most celebrated weekends started out with a pretty decent game. The Hall of Fame game was entertaining and the Dallas Cowboys hung on to beat the Arizona Cardinals 20-18. The HOF speeches Saturday night were for the most part good. And long. Very, very long. Jerry Jones is well deserving of as much time as he wants, but after a half hour, it’s time to wrap it up Jerry. He went 37 minutes. Same with LaDainian Tomlinson (his speech was very inspirational and has been talked about as one of the best speeches ever given during the hall of fame induction ceremony) and Kurt Warner. They were over a half hour. The entire ceremony lasted close to five hours. While they were good speeches, Canton would be wise to put a limit on how long you can speak like 20 minutes. That would be more than plenty. There is still plenty of time for you to say your thank yous and move on. I enjoyed hearing Warner’s speech. Morten Anderson too. We just need them to get cut down.
Misc. headlines
Former New England Patriots and Houston Texans defensive tackle Vince Wilfork has announced his retirement. He will be eating plenty of barbeque in his future. Wide receiver Anquan Boldin has signed with the Buffalo Bills. Brock Osweiler is the Cleveland Browns starting quarterback for their game Thursday night against the New Orleans Saints. Don’t know if he will be the starting quarterback come week one of the regular season, but it is worth noting. And not football related, but Usain Bolt lost to Justin Gatlin on Saturday. Have we really seen the last of Bolt? Most likely, but he may not want to end his career with a loss.
