"The Stack" 6-15-16

The Stack is back on this Thursday with a few topics to discuss. One of them won’t be the Minnesota Twins’ offensive explosion Tuesday night when they scored 20 runs against the Seattle Mariners in their 20-7 win. Who is this? Seahawks-Vikings? Eddie Rosario hit three homeruns for the Twins. That was impressive. Let’s see what we have in “the stack” for today, Thursday, June 15th:

Mayweather-McGregor fight is on

The long awaited, highly anticipated (by most people) fight is happening for real! Boxing’s Floyd Mayweather and UFC’s Conor McGregor both announced via social media that they will fight one another at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on August 26th. Most people have Mayweather winning this fight and winning it very easily. McGregor isn’t a boxer, he’s a UFC fighter. While both are combat sports, the nuances are much more different in the ring than they are in the octagon. Perhaps McGregor will shock the world and come through with the win. As it stands, Mayweather is what 49-0. A loss to McGregor would be devastating. That is why Mayweather will take this seriously.

A lot of people are looking forward to the fight. I am not one of them. If, as most expect, Mayweather will win very early, what is the point in me shelling out cash only to see the fight last not even five or ten minutes? I was disappointed by Mayweather-Pacquiao. Not getting my hopes up for this. I won’t buy it on PPV and I won’t be paying a cover charge to watch it at a bar. Fans are pumped the fight is finally happening, but I will be doing something far more fun and constructive with my time the night of August 26th. I’m sure we will have more on this fight as it gets closer. McGregor is a huge promoter after all.

U.S. Open preview

Golf’s second major of the season tees off today from Erin Hills in Wisconsin. The USGA always makes the courses difficult, but they may have outdid themselves with this one. Erin Hills is over 7700 yards long. The fairways are wide, 60-70 yards in some spots, but the greens will be fast and the feschew! Oh my the feschew. If your ball goes into the rough good luck getting it out. Perhaps it should be good luck finding it let alone getting it out. That stuff is thick. Accurate drivers won’t be hurting too bad from this. Look for reigning U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson to take advantage with his booming drives, but he must keep them in the fairway. Erin Hills is a fairly new course, a little over eleven years old. It is a link style course which will be great for players like Rory McIlroy who grew up playing links golf back in Northern Ireland. He may be just go the guy to take advantage of this course. You can never count out a guy like Jordan Spieth or some of the up-and-comers from the Ryder Cup, but I’m picking McIlroy to win this tournament. Links style fits his game and though the weather will be humid with a chance of rain, McIlroy will reign supreme. Should be a fun tournament to watch.

Penguins party it up at their parade, Warriors to follow today

The Pittsburgh Penguins and over 650 thousand of their closest friends flooded the city yesterday as the Penguins celebrated their Stanley Cup Final victory over the Nashville Predators. Beer and other alcoholic drinks were also consumed by many players and fans. If there is a flood it could be from how much alcohol may have been wasted. It was a cool scene.

The Golden State Warriors will be having their own ticker-tape parade today as NBA Finals champions and I am fairly confident in saying that they will have over a million and maybe closer to two million at this deal. It’s a well-deserved honor and the entire team will have fun today.

The Penguins have said they would accept an invitation to go to the White House. The Warriors as has been reported would not though they did say yesterday they would have to sit down as a team and talk about it. I'm guessing they won't be going.

No blog tomorrow as I will not be near any internet, but on a later blog on Monday we’ll recap the U.S. Open plus any other headlines in the world of sports.
